Fossum announces 2015 recruiting class

MITCHELL, S.D. Dakota Wesleyan University track and field/cross country coach Derik Fossum has signed 11 athletes for the class of 2015 as he heads into his first full season at the helm of the Tiger programs.

I am really excited about the potential in this incoming class,” Fossum said. The talent level is very good, but more importantly they are good people who are excited to come in and work hard to get better.”

The group is made up of three men and eight women signees. The men s members all join DWU from South Dakota. On the women s side, there are five athletes from South Dakota and one each from Nebraska, Wyoming and California.

I am humbled that this group of individuals chose DWU because they believed this was the place they could maximize their potential as people and student-athletes,” Fossum added. It is going to be fun to see all we will accomplish together throughout the next four years.”

The Tigers will also be moving into a new facility sometime in the next year when the new DWU/Avera Sports and Wellness Center opens on campus.

The following is a list of athletes that have signed a National Letter of Intent to compete at DWU starting with the men s signees:

 

Bryce Blank

Freshman, 5 11, Rapid City, S.D., Stevens High School, Distance/Cross Country

 

Will compete in distance events for DWU track, while adding depth for the Tiger cross country team competed in 800, 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs for Rapid City Stevens during high school career and was a member of the Raider cross country team earned Runnin Raider” award and was a member of the Stevens state qualifying team in two seasons named Academic All-State son of Mike and Trish Blank undecided on major at DWU.

 

Jacob Callahan

Freshman, 6 0, Madison, S.D., Madison High School, Jumps

 

Will compete in long jump and triple jump for the Tigers competed in long and triple jump for Madison High School also a member of the Bulldogs cross country, football, basketball, wrestling and powerlifting teams son of James Callahan plans to major in sports, exercise, and wellness, with a minor in biology and art at DWU.

Nick Raab

Freshman, 6 5, Yankton, S.D., Yankton High School, Throws

 

Joins the Tigers after a successful high school throwing career with the Bucks placed seventh in the discus in South Dakota Class AA he finished third in the Eastern South Dakota Conference meet in the discus and sixth in the shot put will also play football for the Tigers in 2015.

Rachel Buxcel

Freshman, 5 7, Murdo, S.D., Jones County High School, Middle Distance/Cross Country

 

Will add depth in the middle distance events for DWU track, while also competing this fall for the Tiger cross country team competed in the 800-meter run for Jones County, with an eighth place finish at the South Dakota Class B State Meet a member of her high school cross country team, with a two top-12 finishes at the state meet participated in basketball and volleyball during high school a member of the Honor Roll all four years daughter of Scott Buxcel and Lori Nix plans to major in sports, exercise and wellness, with a minor in coaching at DWU.

Abigail Collingham

Freshman, 5 4, Polk, Neb., High Plains Community High School, Pole Vault

 

Comes to DWU to compete in the pole vault after successful high school career was a pole vaulter for High Plains Community High School where she picked up a second place finish at state in 2015 holds the High Plains Community High School and Aurora High School pole vaulting records a member of the 1,600-meter relay team at High Plains that set the school record participated in volleyball, basketball and softball during high school daughter of T.J. Collingham and Shelley Carlstrom is undecided on a major at DWU.

Heidi Frazee

Freshman, 5 6, Gillette, Wyo., Throws

 

Set to join the Tiger track and field team and compete the throwing events for DWU threw shot put during her high school career and had a seventh place finish at the Wyoming State Indoor Track Meet daughter of William and Stephenie Hunter plans to major in elementary education at DWU.

Amanda Halsey

Freshman, 5 6, Huron S.D., James Valley Christian School, Student Manager

 

Will be assisting as a student manager for the track and field/cross country teams this season participated in cheerleading for the Vikings was a member of the National Honor Society and was on the Honor Roll throughout high school daughter of Gene and Karen Halsey plans to major in human services at DWU.

Kelsie King

Freshman, 5 7, Mission Viejo, Calif., Capistrano Valley High School, Distance

 

Will be competing in distance races for the Tiger track team, while adding depth to women s cross country competed in the mile, two mile and 5k during the track season in high school also a ran cross country for Capistrano Valley named a scholar athlete daughter of Andy and Karina King plans to major in nursing at DWU.

Kamberlyn Lamer

Freshman, 5 4, Harford, S.D., Tri-Valley High School, Jumps

 

Set to compete in the long and triple jump for the DWU track team finished a successful career at Tri-Valley High School in 2015 placed second in long jump at the 2015 South Dakota Class A State High School Track and Field Meet, with a fourth place finish in 2014, fifth place in 2013 and seventh place in 2012 had a fourth place finish in triple jump in 2014, with a sixth place finish in 2013 and an eighth place showing in 2012 a member of the volleyball, cheer, and cross country teams during high school daughter of Shane Lamer and Jenny Alver plans to pursue a career in art therapy after completing her bachelor s at DWU.

Kristin Shell Longville

Freshman, 5 7, Lake Preston, S.D., Lake Preston High School, Jumps/Sprints

 

Will add depth in jumps and sprints for the Tiger track team competed in long and triple jump for Lake Preston High School also ran the 100 and 200-meter dashes finished fifth in long jump at the 2015 South Dakota Class B State Track and Field Meet and fourth in triple jump a member of the Lake Preston cross country, volleyball and basketball teams daughter of Scott and Michelle Longville plans to major in athletic training with a minor in coaching at DWU.

Erica Venhuizen

Freshman, 5 5, Owanka, S.D., New Underwood High School, Student Manager

 

Joins the DWU track and field/cross country teams as a student manager this season participated in volleyball for New Underwood High School was a member of the Honor Roll during high school daughter of Matthew and Laurel Venhuizen plans to major in elementary education and special education.
