Fossum, Antaya win for Tiger track team

SPEARFISH, S.D. The Dakota Wesleyan University track and field team started the 2014 indoor season Saturday afternoon at the Myrle Hansen Memorial Open in Spearfish, S.D., and Jessie Fossum and Ryan Antaya each came away with a win for the Tigers.

Fossum won the long jump competition with a mark of 16-feet-5 inches, the sixth-best mark in school history. Antaya won the weight throw with a toss of 47-feet-8 inches, which is the fourth-best mark in Tiger indoor track and field history. Fossum also took third in the 60-meter hurdle finals in 9.72 seconds.

Several other Tigers recorded top-five finishes Saturday afternoon. Ariana Arampatzis, in her first collegiate track meet, finished fourth in three events. She took fourth in the pole vault at 8-feet-4.25 inches; in the 60-meter hurdles in 10.45 seconds the third-best time in school history in the long jump with a mark of 15-feet. Abby Fossum finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 32-feet-2.25 inches, the eighth-best mark in Tiger history, and freshman Taylor Smith finished fourth in the 60-meter dash in 9.92 seconds.

Also for the Dakota Wesleyan men, Paul Apenhorst finished third in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.1 seconds the second-fastest time in DWU track history and Gabe Dirksen took third in the 200 in 24.21 seconds. Lionel Karyea took fourth in the 60-meter dash in 7.56 seconds and Daniel Porter took third in the long jump with a leap of 19-feet-9.5 inches. Tyler Volesky also recorded a top-five finish for DWU. He took fifth in the 400-meter dash in 54.36 seconds.

Dakota Wesleyan returns to action Friday, Jan. 17, when it travels to Aberdeen, S.D., for the Northern State Open.
